The Devil's in the Deep, a vilanelle

The deep dark sea is all around me
There is clarity, beauty, and horrible death to be found out here
The Devil's in the deep, can't you see

The ship rides high up upon the waves
The ocean, she is indiscriminate in whom she claims and whom she saves
The deep dark sea is all around me

Storms blow hard and fast, neither canvas nor winds will last
Not always the strong, but, so it seems, the lucky get past
The Devil’s in the deep, can’t you see

Wonders of wonders lay yet to be found in the bosom of the ocean
Mermaids, serpents, and horrid monsters yet unseen hide within its depths
The deep dark sea is all around me

Treasures of gold, gems, and jewels like one has never seen
Taken with countless souls, gone as if they had never been
The Devil’s in the deep, can’t you see

Glory, adventure, treasures, and more are what lure young and old from the shore
Truth be told that, those to survive, are haunted and gaunt by the memories ‘fore they are old
The deep dark sea is all around me
The Devil’s in the deep, can’t you see
